Supporting our team!

At Yellow Wings we take our Corporate Social Responsibility very seriously. We are a fully Carbon Neutral Airline in conjunction with the Wildlife Works project. See details here We also support local community projects such as Kibra United Football Club. We’re delighted to share details of this project and how it all came about.

Meet Ibrahim

Ibrahim has worked with Yellow Wings since 2004 as Head of Quality.  He is always compliant and up to date with the latest regulations and takes on constant training to ensure that he is knowledgeable with the latest technology and developments in the aviation industry. He regularly audits all departments to ensure that they are operating efficiently and effectively and makes sure that all standards are met to the very highest level.

When Ibra is not at Yellow Wings he chairs and supports Kibra Utd Soccer Club which helps the youth in the largest slum in Kenya, Kibera.

Kibra Utd was started by a group of retired professional footballers, including Ibrahim, 10 years ago.  Ibrahim played professional football at a high level in Kenya and wanted to share his knowledge and experience with those less fortunate than himself.  The group of volunteers started going into the slums to train and help young people with their talents as a way of giving back to the community. They would provide training and mentoring as well as the necessary supplies such as shoes and clothes to ensure that the children could participate.  All of this was done in their own time and with their own funds. Due to the dedication and hard work of this team of people the programme went from strength to strength, with many local talents being fostered and developed over the next few years.

In 2011 their hard work started to pay off when they were able to register Kibra Utd as an amateur football club which enabled them to participate in a local league.

The kids start training as young as 5 years old and start playing in the league from 14 years upwards.  The leaders of the club personally teach and coach the kids which empowers them to combat some of the major problems that living in poverty brings.  They inspire the kids into education by not only encouraging the children but also mentoring and supporting the families of the children.  They directly help the families by applying for bursaries and explaining the benefits of education to them.  The impact of this is immense and they are having a huge effect in keeping the children away from drugs and crime.  They are giving the children a true belief in that they can create a better life for themselves through education, football and hard work.

Kibra Utd now has over 300 children enrolled in its project with some finding success on an international level.  They have just had their first player try out for an International Club in Turkey and if he is successful, it will be a great boost for the club and inspiration for the other kids.  They hope that this is just the beginning of continued success on the international circuit, which will raise the profile of the club and bring funds back to the grass roots of the project.  It will enable them to invest in better facilities and support more families in the future.

Kibra Utd still relies heavily on fundraising to keep the project going.  They do have some loyal supporters including Yellow Wings.  Yellow Wings are very proud to be involved in this project and are sponsoring their new away kit and will sponsor matches which pays for pitch rentals, transport and much more.

Matches are currently being played at GEMS international school on a Saturday when they are not travelling to away matches.  The team are now in the National Division 2 and sitting in 2nd place against some very tough teams with an average age of 20 years.  They have a small clubhouse in Kibera which is where they do all their administration and have a small shop.

If you would like to support Kibra Utd you can do so by buying one of their shirts.  They rely heavily on the sale of merchandise as a way of funding the club.  You can find details of the club and how to buy shirts on their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/KibraUnited
